Preparation is Key

In October 2024, Ntombifuthi Brenda Nherera made the move from her home country to Northern Ireland, where she began her role with Beaumont Care. Since then, she’s been settling into life in the UK and embracing the opportunities that come with starting fresh in a new country.

We caught up with Brenda to learn more about her experience and the practical insights she wants to share with others preparing for their own journey abroad.

Advice for the First Weeks

One of Brenda’s top tips? Don’t be afraid to ask for directions, especially in those early days when everything is unfamiliar.

“Always ask if you don’t know where you’re going. If you’ve never used Google Maps before, it can be tricky. Asking will save you time and help you get where you need to be, especially in the first weeks.”

From finding your way to your new job, to navigating a different transport system, Brenda highlights how simple actions like asking questions can make all the difference in feeling confident and in control.

Joy in New Responsibilities

Adjusting to life abroad has brought challenges, but for Brenda, it has also brought a deep sense of purpose. Providing for her family and creating a more secure future has been the most rewarding part of her move.

“Since moving, I find joy in being able to pay my children’s school fees, support my family, and plan a secure home for my kids. Staying connected through video calls also helps, as homesickness can be tough.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that relocation isn’t just about geography, it’s about growth, impact, and creating a better life for those you love and care for.
