Taking the next step in her global nursing career.
Filomena Lithgow's journey in nursing began at the young age of 15 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Inspired by her math teacher, she joined the Red Cross, witnessing firsthand the demands and rewards of emergency care. By 16, Filomena had already taken part in roadside rescues and knew her future lay in caring!
After completing her four-year nursing degree, specialising in general nursing, psychiatry, community health, and midwifery, Filomena's career flourished. She managed emergency departments at leading hospitals in South Africa, earning a stellar reputation for her leadership and expertise. Her skills even took her beyond borders, working as a Nurse Superintendent in Angola and later in Canada.
Relocating to the UK: A New Chapter
When Filomena came across MMA Healthcare Recruitment's LinkedIn advert, she knew it was the next step in her global nursing career. "MMA's team guided me tirelessly through every single step of the process," she reflects. Today, Filomena works at HC One’s Falstone Manor in Sunderland, where she continues to build a remarkable legacy of care.
Transitioning to the UK's nursing system, however, came with its challenges. "The UK is very restrictive, especially for African nurses. Procedures I’ve done my entire career required retraining and certification here. It’s an adjustment, but it ensures residents are always protected," she explains. Her advice? "Research, study, and prepare." Whether it’s understanding the weather or local cultural nuances—like the friendly football rivalry in Sunderland—Filomena believes adaptability is key.
Making an Impact: Achievements and Adaptation
Filomena’s biggest achievements go beyond certifications. From building deep bonds with residents to knowing each of their quirks—like sipping drinks through a spoon—she emphasises person-centered care. Her proudest moments include making critical decisions that have saved lives, earning trust, and being asked to represent Falstone Manor in an interview.
The Support that Made it Possible
Reflecting on her journey, Filomena credits MMA for a seamless relocation.
"Seven months later, the MMA team still checks in, offers webinars, and ensures I feel supported. I’ll forever be grateful for their role in getting me here.”
Final Thoughts
Filomena’s story is a testament to the resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment of healthcare professionals. Her experience reminds us of the profound impact nurses have—not just in delivering care, but in making people feel seen and valued.
